Apparently she is a low res picture. What is it with screenshots of these super low res video calls? Why are they even a thing? Why have video calls not gotten better over the last 20(!) years?

No, they really have not. I used to video chat a ton back in 2008 (Skype) and even the best video calls today are barely any better. No need to talk about 4K, 1080p or even 720p, it is somewhere around 360p to 480p. Not using Skype anymore, am talking about Whatsapp for 1 to 1 and meetings with teams, Google etc.
