Holy shit, I had no idea the voice was an act.
It was, then is sort of wasn’t. There are later recordings of him trying to regress to his “natural” speaking voice and it was still harsh. Not as harsh as his performative voice, but decades of grating his vocal cords definitely changed his voice.
Sort of like how Miley Cyrus not sounds like a barfly that has smoked cowboy killers for decades.
I remember hearing a voicemail and it was weird hearing his normal voice, it was late in his life too.
