that “would have played into Russia’s hands,”

Presumably this implies the “coup attempt” was by Russian spies and local collaborators. So why not just say so?

Under the Ukrainian constitution, they cannot hold an election while martial law is under effect. Much of the population (a majority?) is either displaced or in an occupied territory.

Elections during a war would lead to the enemy interfering and installing a puppet government.

Especially if we are talking about Russia.

Everyone on .ml is a tankie. Everyone on .world is a fascist. Lemmy loves its serverism, unfortunately.

People can’t comprehend that different people can have different opinions, apparently. There needs to be an easier explanation for it such as “tankie” or “fascist”. “Idiot/ignorant” is a much more believable explanation,.imo

Trying to get rid of Zelensky now is russian propaganda when only a small part of the country are able to vote. It would strip the democratic rights away from those living in captured territory.

Those were the parts of the country they were ethnically cleansing anyway. Besides, they banned the political parties that were popular there.

And they already voted. To join Russia.

As long as the “peace deal” involves “give us your land” then it is not a peace deal, it is extortion.

They already took the land. The peace deal involves not throwing 50 year olds into killing fields just to lose more.

      No.

We get rid of old munitions and equipment.

Companies get rich by replenishing stock with new military contracts.

We get new data that we can use to war game without actually fighting first hand.

You might not think it’s worth it, but the people benefiting do.

Isn’t their government currently illegitimate because they refused to hold elections?

Fact is, if Russia wanted to overthrow Zelensky they would’ve done it by now. The problem isn’t Zelensky, but the entire notion of Ukrainian independence from Russia. Until Russia can comprehensively beat that idea out of the Ukrainian ethos, this war will not end.

See also: US-Cuba, China-Taiwan, and historically US-South America under the Monroe Doctrine.

Note that this idea isn’t about domestic sovereignty insomuch as it is about who your allies can be. If Ukraine were independent but in CSTO or even in BRICS, there would be no issues. Similarly, if Cuba were to be a US ally instead, sanctions would be dropped and it would be welcomed with open arms.

Laws of Ukraine explicitly state that elections cannot be held in a wartime. These provisions are older than current presidency and parliament.

Claim to illegitimacy due to refused elections is the best way to tell everyone you gobble up Russian propaganda.

How is it a fact that Russia would have done it by now if they wanted it? You think thenparatroopers they landed into Kiev were there for the scenery? That Russia truly wanted to rid themselves of billions upon billions in equipment and half a million of their population?

      bizzare.

the entire notion of Ukrainian independence from Russia. Until Russia can comprehensively beat that idea out of the Ukrainian ethos, this war will not end.

Now to be clear, you’re not of course advocating that Russia do that therefore violating a peoples self determination, right?
