I’m new to linux and have been using Linux Mint (Cinnamon) for the past few days. I was using Vivaldi on Windows 11 and I loved it so I decided to also use it on Mint.

However the problem now is it “stutters” a lot. videos stutter, even typing (like right now) it just randomly stutters and pauses. Also sometimes it simply won’t open a new tab. So I don’t know if this is common with Vivaldi or what.

I’m open to using a different browser as long as I can port over my passwords and bookmarks from vivaldi. is there a better alternative?

EDIT: so it wasn’t the browser, it’s the nvidia drivers. the 535 driver is causing it to stutter, tried switching to nouveau drivers and while it solves the stuttering it tanks gaming. tried installing the 550 drivers and it bricked my system. recovered and just going to deal with the stuttering of the 535 for now.

    The stuttering can be caused by your video card. Do you use nvidia ?

    Did you try replicating these issues with another browser ? Have they been resolved or stayed the same ?

      yup after posting I did a bit of reading. It was the nvidia driver. switched to the nouveau driver and problem solved. sorry still new to all this.

        Are you into gaming? If not, then it is perfectly fine to run the nouveau driver.

            Indeed. Nouveau simply does not have the gaming performance of Nvidia’s proprietary driver.

              So either use Nvidia’s driver and deal with the stuttering or don’t and can’t game. great.

                You entered the Linux Desktop scene at an awkward time, using an NVIDIA card.

                Linux Mint’s packages are old. I would never recommend anyone to use Mint with an NVIDIA card. Not recently at least.

                We just hit a compatibility point ( this week ) with the NVIDIA drivers and popular DE’s like KDE Plasma and GNOME which provides an excellent Wayland experience. Distro’s like CachyOS and Nobara Linux are probably one of the only ones taking advantage of this so far. Besides those of us who roll their own.

                I have to admit, a proprietary web browser hardly seems like a reason to stress out. If the browser is a deal breaker, is it specific to Mint and whatever version of the driver you had installed?

                  it was the nvidia 535 driver. I switched to nouveau and that solved the stuttering/lag. but made gaming suck. so then I tried installing 550 drivers and that just outright bricked my system, recovered and went back to the 535. works for gaming so I’ll just tolerate the stuttering I guess.

      It’s the best of the Chromium-based browsers, but closed-source is a shame. I wish Firefox would copy some of Vivaldi’s UI ideas.

      Many people are not activists like Richard Stallman. Perhaps it’s better to run libre software, but it’s perfectly reasonable to also run proprietary software.

      For example, I switched to Linux when I could run proprietary games on Proton.

        Agreed. I’d say that, if you have the option, then the libre option is the one you should pick whenever you can. But, realistically, software is a hammer, and you should pick the hammer that does what you want, and ignore the internet hollering that you’re somehow impure if you use even a single piece of proprietary software.

      So? Vivaldi is FAR superior to any other browser, even Chrome engine base ones. With the amount of customization, privacy and full Chrome plug in ecosystem support, being close source is hardly relevant.

    I recall reading a few weeks ago that Nvidia released new driver updates that would fix stuttering issues, iirc specifically with Wayland. I got no specifics for you, but maybe a few searches will shed light

    try disabling or enabling hardware acceleration. i think its in the vivaldi:flags page. also did you install flatpak version? you could try and download the .deb from their website and install that to see if they are any different. i was a vivaldi user too but ended up ditching it because of some bugs in the linux version.
