You should not buy thing from Amazon because their practices are anti-humanity in general, but you shouldn’t really be surprised that their cloud servers are being used by Israel. They probably also sell cloud computing to Hamas, and Hezbollah, the KKK, and China, and Putin, and Erdogan, and Kim Jong Un, and Nestle, and anyone else who has a dollar to spend.

AWS is in everything. They don’t care what you do as long as you pay them to do it. Boycott the sun, next.

Oh, and their competitors are Google (also mentioned as taking lart in Project Nimbus) and Microsoft Azure. How much do you want to bet that Microsoft is also a vendor for the project?

Don’t get me wrong. Amazon has no morals, and we should boycott these massive corporations, but then what? It’s not like driving past a restaurant because the owners are MAGA Nazis. How exactly do you propose we boycott Amazon? And even if the boycott was somehow successful, and they pull out of Project Nimbus, would you then be OK with ending the boycott?

I don’t think the point of a post like this is saving the world from Amazon, you might be thinking a little too large. As a lower middle class American, I don’t have a ton of say in the workings of the world. But I do see things like this, and I can choose to direct what little spending power I have to more ethical companies. It might not make a difference in the grand scheme of things, but I’d like to try to do right in the few things I DO have control over. A couple little changes I can make are cancelling Amazon prime (already did a long time ago) and using other cloud solutions at work. I can also share this with people I know who have not yet cancelled Prime but could be swayed by this information.

I think it’s easy to reach a place of nihilism and lash out at others for being naive enough to think they can make a difference. The world as we know it will likely be ending sooner than later, and the people with the power to make change don’t give a fuck. But personally, I know I’ll be more comfortable watching the end of the world knowing I took care of the people I love and made positive choices where I can. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing. The world will need empathetic people who can keep getting back up on the other side of the next few decades.

Do not let perfect be the enemy of good. I’m not using the Amazon store either although I admit myself i need to read up more about AWS.

I’m planning to learn more about self hosting.

Another good alternative for AWS is using proton servers.

The problem is indirect consumption. Your bank, insurance, news, etc., probably uses AWS, GCP, and/or Azure and there’s not much you can do about that.

Interesting comment. I haven’t considered those factors.

Right. Like my tiny little personal react website is hosted on Amazon S3. Does that mean people should boycott me? This would be like trying to Boycott PHP back when 90% of the websites on the internet were PHP sites.

    And water is wet

As if the horrible treatment of workers in the US, and possibly in many other countries wasn’t convincing enough

Does anyone happen to have the link they provide for proof? Not questioning that it’s happening, I would just like to do further reading.
