I don’t need 1000hp. I just want an affordable, electric pickup with 6+ feet bed and good range.

Rivian already announced new models that may be closer to that. In the meantime, think of this as differentiation: keeping their premium models relevant next to more mainstream models. I hope it works.

Also think of it similar to Tesla when they used to update technology more regularly, especially to “Plaid” versions of model S + X. I believe Cybertruck included higher voltage wiring and charging that could really benefit all models

Silverado has a proper bed (at 5’11”) and the mid gate folds into the cab for around 9’ of length, and loads of range. Affordable is NOT going to go together with range at this point. Though typically if one needs the bed it’s rare to also need the range in the same vehicle.

Seriously - when do we get something the size of a 90s-era Hilux that’s reasonably performant, but mostly optimized to be a torquey little stuff-hauler? I feel like that would sell like goddamn hotcakes.

Exactly. That’s basically what I drive now but having a 17 year old truck comes with its downsides

Heh, I’m not in construction, but I’m still rocking an old 03’ Jetta. The low tech has some downsides… but it’s also got some upsides. For instance, I’m 100% certain my car does not phone home, ever.

What ICE vehicle has what you’re looking for? I’m not a truck guy, so I don’t know the lay of the land. Long ago, my family got hooked on (mini)vans. They’ve got more bed space than any pickup, and come with a free topper. Plus you can add the seats back in to haul 8 people. Trips to the garden centre and kids outings are equally a cinch.

I drive a Nissan Navara currently and it has everything I need, but it’s 17 years old and has a ton of moving parts that need replacing and fluids that must be changed. Electric pickup would require much less maintenance and just overall be mechanically more simple.

Yeah a van would be more practical but I’m a car guy and especially a truck/SUV guy and I find vans boring so I rather drive a truck that gets the job jone as well but I can also have fun driving (and looking at) it.

Ok gotcha. Don’t have those here, but have encountered Hiluxes on my travels and look to be similar sizes. Looks like a rather small bed, so was surprised you said 6’ bed, unless that is with the tailgate down? Regardless, small electric pickups are definitely missing from the market and everything just keeps getting bigger.

Navara is called Frontier in the US. It’s basically the same truck except Frontier comes with a petrol engine while mine is a 2.5 litre turbo diesel. I have the King Cab model which is a 2 seater with a shorter cabin, thus the longer bed which is 180cm (5.9ft) with the tailgate up.

I think Telo is on the right track, I think they’ll blow away the current ETrucks if/when they make it to market. Specifically in the trades since they’re more affordable and configurable. I could actually see someone buying a fleet of these even over the F150 lightning pro.
