I have just noticed a new community that is dedicated to harrassing an influencer they don’t like. They are migrating here after being banned from Reddit.

I don’t see anything in the rules that this might run afoul of, but I wanted to make a post and ask if this is content we really want on lemmy.ca? The same influencer who got them kicked from reddit could come after lemmy.ca.

The community is [email protected]

We’ll monitor and make sure the instance rules and overall Lemmy Code of Conduct are being followed.

A sort of related more general comment. For the sake of my Local feed, I wish Lemmy.ca was only human-created Canada-centric content. That’s why I signed up to the lemmy.ca instance. A couple week’s prior to this community’s creation there was an influx of bot-run communities. I blocked them, because I don’t want to see 15 Cool Guide or Reddit-based Nostalgia posts in my Local feed, displacing human-created Canada-centric content. It’s not a perfect solution though, because I wouldn’t mind seeing those posts on my All feed. I know from community growth and server cost perspectives it doesn’t make sense to limit who or what can be posted (beyond blocking hate speech and other obviously objectionable material). I wish I could have multiple Subscribed feeds. In lieu of that, maybe I should choose another instance based on Local feed appeal and port Lemmy.ca communities that I like to my subscribed feed

How do we even confirm content is from Canadians?

“Please enter your postal code so a representative can meet you in a pre-approved location like a cop shop and share the site access password required to get to the login page”

I never said from Canadians. I said Canada-centric. In other words, Canada-related. There are more curated instances out there, like beehaw.org. Nevertheless, I appreciate the joke: “Passport required to post” lol

I currently have 2 lemmy accounts: .ca and lemmynsfw. But after sharing my perspective here I did explore other instances and I think it makes sense for me to have 2 non-nsfw accounts. That way I can have 2 different subscribed feeds. I also realized that for one reason or another the All feed on a lemmy.ca instance is pretty inclusive of the larger Lemmy landscape compared to a beehaw.org or lemmy.ml instance. (I compared the 3 without being logged in and the 2 other instances didn’t display as many posts on the All feed as lemmy.ca did - I’m not sure why but I would love to be enlightened by a more knowledgeable lemmy :)

Yeah I’d love if we could customize the default feed for our users, but lemmy today doesn’t have any functionality like that.

Beehaw.org defederated lemmy.world which hosts most of the Lemmy communities. For lemmy.ml I’m not sure.

I appreciate your helpfulness, thank you! I’m aware of that setting but ideally I’d be able to set it differently for different feeds (i.e., no bots on my local or subscribed feeds, but bots are okay on my all feed)

No worries. I recently found the option myself while setting things up and just wanted to share.

That would be a nifty feature to micro manage feeds like that. I wonder how hard it would be to write the code for it.

Yeah I don’t know if the Local feed is useful anywhere but in the smallest, most specific instances. If our instance for example allowed only Canadian related communities. E.g. TorontoCycling but not Cycling.

I am all for the frivolous, childish, and irresponsible use of the internet, but that community just seems like a shit magnet. The absolute best case scenario is that nothing happens, anything else will be worse, like Lemmy.ca becoming the hub for b-list celebrity hate-clubs.

I don’t think it goes super well either. It’s more suited for it’s own instance or an instance built for that sort of thing.

Oh well, they’ve linked back to this thread already and admin seems to be watching. Worst case scenario is we get some entertaining reddit-esque drama when they are flounced.

From the posts I’ve seen so far, it feels like the community is stating that they only exist to criticize what they see as a misleading influencer, but to me it all comes off as bullying/harrassment.

If they want to encourage change of some sort they could try and do that, but that’s not what the posts are encouraging, it feels like generic woman hate targeted at a single woman.

This was an interesting read and explains pretty well the issues with her. Not as black and white as they make it out I’m sure but neither was I correct about it being a simple hate group.

I had read that post already. Even if there are things that she’s doing that isn’t great, it doesn’t really justify a group of people circlejerking hate about them.

Oh but it’s juicy and entertaining as all hell. Supporters of papaya woman have found Lemmy now. I am looking forward to further developments. This is much better than the usual tankie drama and it’s local to .ca! They have a reporter involved apparently. Delicious.
