A judge in Washington state has blocked video evidence that’s been “AI-enhanced” from being submitted in a triple murder trial. And that’s a good thing, given the fact that too many people seem to think applying an AI filter can give them access to secret visual data.

    Yeah it doesn’t matter. Believe it or not your brain cannot recall things with 100% accuracy either, yet they still allow testimony in court. If an AI upscaler or whatever can have a high percentage of correctly identifying license plate text or what have you, it’s fine.

      License plate images are very information sparse (always follows the same design and format), which is what allows this to be done. If you’re looking at what someone’s holding on their blurry hands, the information is much denser (you can hold nearly any real object imaginable), so the tiniest bit of noise can completely change the answer.
