The Toronto Maple Leafs’ 3-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday was a night of milestones, headlined by Auston Matthews scoring his 60th goal of the season.

. . .

In terms of the game itself, Toronto put together a far better effort than its last trip to Buffalo, which resulted in a 9-3 loss. The Maple Leafs’ defensive effort was far from flawless, but Ilya Samsonov was sharp in his first action since March 23, bailing out his teammates whenever they slipped up — a phenomenon that became uncomfortably common for Toronto at times in the third period.

Tavares opened the scoring after 4:58 of breathless hockey for the first play stoppage of the game. Nick Robertson added to that lead less than three minutes into the second, and Auston Matthews provided the dagger with his 60th late in the third.
