All this said, Rowling inevitably benefits from the publication and sale of Hogwarts Legacy, whether that’s in the form of royalties, a specific payment to adapt this work, the ongoing contract with Warner Bros., or simply the publicity and attention to her work. Warner Bros. acquired a license to Rowling’s “Wizarding World” franchise in 1997, and has since used it to produce and distribute 11 films (eight Harry Potter novel adaptations, three in in the Fantastic Beasts storyline).

Jennifer Duggan, an associate professor of English at the University of South-Eastern Norway — says that it’s possible to interpret the text of Harry Potter itself in ways that would certainly horrify its writer. “My central thesis—one which has also been argued by other academics like Thomas Pugh and David Wallace — is that the Harry Potter novels are deeply queer,” she tells POPSUGAR. "I mean this in both senses of the term: they champion nonnormativity through the contrast of the ‘perfectly normal’ Dursleys and Harry, and they are, at their heart, a story about a boy with an ‘abnormality’ (as the Dursleys call his magic) who comes out of his cupboard under the stairs and discovers and finds and affinity for a hidden, colourful, queer world. I take this argument further to argue that the novels are easily read through a trans lens, since there is a focus in many of the books on shapeshifting, including several cross-gendered transformations

Jessie Earl, who is trans, acknowledged the inclusion of trans characters in an essay for GameSpot:

Rowling is not directly involved in the game, and although WB Interactive’s president failed to condemn Rowling’s words, the developers inside the company have worked to let you create a transgender character in the game. However, it’s still difficult for any trans person to look at any element of the Harry Potter franchise and not see the harm that continues to be perpetuated by the woman who created it. […] Rowling still sits at the head of the franchise, benefiting not only financially from every sale, but through its popularity. The more relevant Harry Potter remains, the more platform Rowling is given to perpetuate anti-transgender language. […]
