A huge point that was brought up on /r/assholedesign: The like to dislike ratio is one of the most important things that tell you if a video is a scam or misinformation.
It’s ok, now we can just rely on Google/YouTube to let us know what is or isn’t misinformation!
Just curious: I always see your comments at the top of threads even though they aren’t upvoted. Is this by design or just a coincidence? Too lazy to check the source.
Newer comments are ranked higher by default.
I disagree with this decision(not that a evil megacorp like Alphabet cares).
Sometimes, dislikes represent the anger of regular people when companies treat them like shit, ex: Nintendo
at this point youtube is trying to become tik tok, because people spend more time on tik tok than youtube. (i recall seeing a statistic sonewhere that people spend more time overallon tik tok than youtube, and i think its true.)
Ah that must be it.
Basically what the #shorts thing is too
That’s exactly why they’re doing it. To “protect the brands”. Brands don’t want bad press or for others to know that people are mad at them.
Brands include media and governments. Not only does it hide bad press and community consensus, it helps them control what the public sees and believes. It also further hides any sort of manipulation they’d like to do (either with vote counts, or with the recommendation algorithms).
Fuck everything about this.
Why? You can still click dislike and it does the same thing it did before (nothing)
It doesn’t do nothing. It counts as interaction with the video and you get more stuff to dislike.
no it does something: https://feddit.de/post/4237/comment/12662
Care to elaborate? Seems like a sensible change unless you’re in the business of selling dislikes.
Without dislikes you don’t know if people just didn’t like the video or if it was unsuccessful because of the algorithm. Views or likes alone aren’t a clear answer.
You don’t use views or likes. You go to the reach and engagement tab in your analytics where breaks it all down. Watch time is the most important stat and dislikes is not correlated to it. You could have your video have 80% dislikes but the best watch time of your channel and your video is fine to get recommended anywhere cause it’s watch time is still fine.
I meant as a user. Now you have no way to know if people liked a video. A video could have many views because of advertising or being shown in a prominent place.
without knowing how the majority reacted to your video, you cant get a general sense if they liked it or not. also you cant know if youve made a major mistake (such as filming a dead body in the japanese forest.)(emplemon did a great video on why dislikes are inportant, search for it on invidious.)
Afaik, the dislike count is still there, but private.
right-wingers have monopolized dislikes since the very beginning, a lot of “people” will be against this change
I feel like I’m seeing that effect here? I never noticed that lemmy broke out downvotes but here we are.
lemmy can be a really bigoted platform
I’m spending less and less time on this video site.
Lots of great alternatives, that are open and promote community building, instead of censorship.
Oh no censorship? What kind?
YouTube seems to be censoring a lot of actual educational/informative channels discussing real world topics, while allowing scams, disinformation, clickbait BS and random drama to run rampant. Any sort of leftist videos also seem to get taken down real fast. Debunking videos too.
And of course there’s also the thing where large copyright holders and copyright trolls alike can censor whatever video they like, even if it falls under fair use and in some cases, even if they’re not the actual copyright holder.
Kind of like how disliking comments already does nothing.
Can’t hurt the trolls’ feelings!
dislikes do give a first impression to the viewer, and can be used to get a general sense of video reception. so theyre not useless, it’s just most people like the video anyway because their told to at the start of every video.
I’m not saying they’re useless. I’m actually pointing out that dislikes on comments already not show to anyone else and doesn’t even affect the ranking.
I use it to hopefully signal to the algorithm that is carefully updating my google data profile that I don’t want to see more of that kind of video.
So the quality of a YouTube video will be judged on the basis of “the ratio” like Twitter. This really sucks.
So they are simply allowing a fake positivity culture to flourish, akin to the bread and circus concept by the oh-so-grand West. No dislikes mean no problems.
It means no failed video. The algorithm could push something and there would be no way for users to see if it was received well or not. Youtube will know, they have watchtime etc.
This probably is good for sponsorship. Like the Abby Shapiro videos that were massively pushed through ads. But nobody liked them so they got a lot of downvotes.
Also remember this failed YT thing, Youtube Rewind? Next time nobody will know it was a fail.
Rewind is one of the cringiest things YouTube has ever done.
Just learned that the dislikes will still be available for the creator to see in YT Studio
The creators have way more tools anyways, dislikes was helpful to the users. I don’t care if creators can still see them.
Fair enough. I really don’t like that they are becoming less transparent. If anything, they should be becoming more transparent.
I was exactly wanting to refer to YouTube Rewind failures since the last few years.
Facebook has been doing the same thing for decades and YouTube has seen how successful it is.
They’re already gone for me and I hate it so much.
I miss the 5 star rating system. Youtube has been getting worse for years. Corporations “innovate” themselves into the ground.
same. I feel that YT try their hardest to disempower their users.
Other video sites empower users, and are using far more advanced technology stacks.
Wow, they already pushed the change through after one day. Such short notice and it’s already in effect. This is total bs.
List the alternatives here for those that are looking for them?
The best alternative is the desktop version of LBRY. Decentralized, open-source blockchain tech. Check Odysee.com (which uses LBRY) for a more moderated experience. A lot of tech Youtubers have already synced their channel with LBRY.
If you haven’t already, move away from YouTube. Invidious, piped, and freetube on desktop/browser and NewPipe on android for youtube-compatible clients. Peertube is the future, it just isn’t quite ready yet. Lbry is cool as well.
