Just today I had the lovely situation to get an ad break during two podcast episodes on Spotify mobile (Android).
Changing the track does work but the ad break stays. BUT I could fast forward the ad.

I pay fucking Family Prem. for that shit. WTF?!
@The Haters: No, this was not a baked in ad by the podcast hoster but literally inserted by Spotify.

Yeah, Spotify made that deal with podcasts. They wanted them on their platform so bad, that they fucked every single paying customer they have.

I have Spotify Premium Duo, and it’s the same thing on podcasts.

I switched to AntennaPod for podcasts because of this. It’s also just a better experience - it auto downloads new episodes and deletes them after playing.

I love Podcast Addict, but I don’t think you can set the sort per podcast. I want my entertainment ones to be oldest->newest and the reverse for things like news.

I was about to comment this! I learned about that app from a few Lemmy users recommending it, and it’s the real deal. Podcasts still generally have ads inserted in (which you can fast forward through), BUT I learned that you can set rules for your subscriptions which apply to each episode, like “skip the first 45s of each episode”. Go to subscriptions, tap the settings gear wheel, and find auto skip!

Spotify can be configured to auto download, but you need to open the app. To my knowledge it doesn’t auto delete after listening, but when it reaches the 4th latest release it is deleted. Personally i prefer that they’re not auto deleted after listening because i like to share some podcasts moments with my SO.

No, this was not a baked in ad by the podcast hoster but literally inserted by Spotify.

Just FYI, those two things don’t need to be exclusive. In this case Spotify is probably the one sponsoring the podcast, and so they inserted ads themselves, as opposed to the content creators including their sponsor ads. Many more successful podcasts are doing this now, and it seems like the ads get shoved in when there sometimes aren’t even breaks.

Not saying it doesn’t suck, it absolutely does. Just pointing out that it’s a new trend. So it’ll probably get worse!

As this was the WAN show by LTT I doubt that. At least the sponsoring.

Spotify inserts their own ads into every podcast, regardless of whether you have premium or not. Then on top of that the podcasters themselves usually insert either ads or sponsorships into it too. I’ve seen countless podcasts do this now. In the worst cases that feels something like this: ad (by spotify) > introduction and depending on the podcaster potentially ads there too > barely any content > sponsorship > barely any content > ad (by spotify) > barely any content > podcast break and either sponsorship or ads by the podcaster > repeat for 2nd half

Genuine question - why does anyone listen to podcasts on Spotify? There have been and still are a TON of quality podcast apps that are 100% free and don’t do this bullshit. Like, I’m aware Spotify has podcasts but in my mind Spotify is music, podcast app is podcasts. It was that way for more than a decade. I just don’t get it TBH.

Probably they just want to use the same app they’re using for listening to music. Although I also have them both. And I love AntennaPod more for podcasts, plus there’s no tracking, and it’s just a different experience overall.

Seems weird to me in a day and age where switching apps is literally just a swipe of a finger. People will jump from Instagram to tik tok to texting to emailing to Whatsapp without thinking about it at all, but a podcast app is a hurdle they don’t want to deal with. Even more bizarre because until very recently it was always like that, for the entire history of podcasts. It’s a shame too because podcast apps are so intuitive these days. Listening to podcasts on Spotify feels clunky by comparison.

To each their own I guess, but I personally just don’t understand it.

I briefly listened to podcasts on Spotify til I realised they inserted ads despite me being a paying member. I don’t really listen to podcasts at all anymore, but when I do I usually listen to YouTube ones since adblock + sponsorblock = zero ads and interruptions

Makes a lot more sense. I don’t listen to very many but when I do I use an app that isn’t Spotify. I don’t mind fast forwarding the commercials in the app. I have no desire to have Spotify try and algorithm my podcast tastes, especially not on top of injecting extra ads into them

I second this, very nice indeed!

I also use their Picard software to check the downloaded album, then it updates the metadata automatically and places them in the appropriate folder structure.

It’s good for similar artist recommendations, but I typically prefer looking for music by similar track. There’s not a way to do this with brainz is there? I’m pretty happy with Tidal’s feature for this but always looking for others.

no indeed, I don’t think it’s that specific. I mainly browse the weekly exploration playlist, based on my listens, which either recommends other of my favorite songs that I hadn’t listened yet, or unknown songs that usually fit my styles. Enough for me to cut the subscriptions 🥳

This lets you immediately slot in a spotify link someone sends you to an iOS VLC playlist on the go.

The past few years I am constantly out of the house and on my phone. I used to postpone learning how to make my mobile workflow operate because PC is obviously better. But stuff like this and Invidious keeps me on par with regular people and allows me to be passed the aux without spontaneously combusting out of awkwardness.

Now, to be fair, I hate every podcast. But if I want to clip parts of the hosts being stupid to make fun of them in a blog, this utility and other spotify download tools are sadly needed

Oh also if you look up Michael Hudson’s appearances he tend to visit really cool shows

He talks about the history of central banking in the United States, Europe, and Japan, and how we created the neocolonial structure that persists today, criticizes neoliberal far right banking policy and exposes how it’s just there to strip the world of resources for the USA.

The shows on the Geopolitical Economy Report on Youtube are really freaking good, best 20th century history podcast I’ve listened to.

That’s fine lol I got too focused on late 20th century history and I’m not that old, I have a lot of reading to do about general historical trivia too. Like I don’t know about, say, Chinese historical epics and shit, so I’ve been looking that stuff up recently with my brother. Also check out Samir Amin and Andre Gunder Frank and Immanuel Wallerstein and Fernand Braudel if you ever want to get deep into that world systems theory shit. Ancient India and China and western Asia.

Hudson’s work is a big influence of David Graeber who seems more popular on this site due to his presence at Occupy and stuff but I find the writing abt the monetary history of the ancient mediterranean and the roman empire and shit much more compelling.

Do I make money off blogging? Not by shitposting about people online, or explaining to people why shows they listen to are drivel. For instance I went into the archives of a war show someone recommended and looked up what they were saying about Ethiopia around the time their PM got banned off facebook.

I have published some stuff which I guess constitutes working in writing articles but that’s not how I make a living primarily.

I’m just a hater on my own time mainly, saves me the effort of listening to bad shows by immediately finding their flaws lolz
