Totally agree. It’s going to cause a lot of people to freak out but it really needs to happen. We don’t need more roads, we need more transit and active transportation options.

A lot of good will come from this if we can funnel the money into other transit options. The funny thing is that with alternative forms of transit, there will be less cars on the road anyway meaning no need for road expansions

Sure but we have massive transit issues to sort out before it becomes commonplace. Our cities at least on the prairies are to sprawled out.

They are unfortunately; it’s the same in Ottawa which is currently planning to add more lanes to HW 417.

This announcement from the government needs to come with a heavy financial commitment to transit which I didn’t see promised in the article. We need high speed rail between cities and we need more commuter/inner city rail inside our cities if we want to get people off the highways.

Unfortunately all the federal government has promised so far for the Windsor -> Québec corridor is “high frequency rail” which is not going to incentivise people to take the train.

Just in time for Doug Ford’s “free car travel for everyone!” giveaway.

It seems likely that unless they make a serious effort to build new rail transport to take its place, the delay in highway building will be as short-lived as the government.

Is it the federal government’s job to finance roads though? Don’t all provinces already have their ministry responsible of roads or that’s a Quebec thing?
