In its current state, both Loblaw and Walmart Canada have so far refused to sign on to the grocer code of code that has been in development since fall 2021.
Loblaws is a parasite of a company.

The government knows it can legislate, right? It never seems to forget this when it’s making demands of workers, or the public.
This should have been a condition of letting them off with a slap for bread-fixing
Time for the government to operate grocery stores selling staple items. No need for them to get into luxury goods and snacks, but a not for profit business for grains, flour, fruits, vegetables, dairy and bread etc would be nice. Keep those costs down and they can create additional measures to stabalize costs.
Like Co-op grocery stores but an actual co-op with better prices.
Maybe give extra food expiring to food banks could help a ton too, instead of being evil and throwing it away.
Thats not profitable nor will it make an oligarch even more rich so that won’t fly in this country. Canada is a captialistic hellscape with a stereotype for being polite about it.
Why go through all this trouble when they can legislate the prices, or profit margins on these items at all retailers?

Disband these grocery cartels and come up with a better food distribution system that works for the people.
I mean, what the hell is this anyway? Our government has more than enough power to force these companies into the ground if they don’t comply, so move that muscle and work for the taxpayers who are being robbed by these corporations!
Someone somewhere is getting paid off. It’s all a scham. Things won’t change until people are so fed up that they take to the streets.
A surprise only to those who think it’s a good idea to allow large companies to corner the market.
Plus there are already existing concepts that prevent this. Simply tax massive profits made from the labour of others, having a non-profit competitor, laws against profiteering during a crises, a maximum CEO/worker pay ratio, etc. Actually applying those concepts ahead of time would help a lot more than a reactive code of conduct.
