umm trying to lure someone into marriage with expensive gifts and promise that her parents will buy them an apartment is exactly being materialistic?

I considered that a possibility but the title didn’t suggest that. If so, it’s too subtle for me…

TBF if you meet an Asian Girl in Uni in the USA then statistically they are more likely to be of a wealthier upbringing than like 90% of Americans.

Could you afford to move to Tokyo for 4 years of university? It’s expensive and requires wealthy parents to go to school abroad like that.

Not to mention that most colleges/universities charge international students more than domestic. Many Asian students attend university in the UK purely for prestige, and many of them fork out enough money for managed accommodation that it’s become a huge business in itself.

That’s what I was confused about. Like, how can you tell someones money by their race. It had the same energy as “they look mexican, they must be illegals” to me.

It really depends on the country. Anecdotally Chinanese girls from deeeeep mainland China are materialistic. They sorta can be since there are so few young girls in China so they can be picky.

Girls from Taiwan, Philippines ,Japan, Vietnam, Thailand are not like that.

Countries have a mixed bag of people. Some people only care about money, some want to make the world a better place, some are only interested in making a living and raising a family. Human behavior doesn’t change from country to to country, ethnicity, or religion, or even historical period. The only thing that changes are the outlets available to reach thise goals. Ancient Egyptians, Roman citizens, Arab nomads, Mongolian shepards, Aztec farmers, Appalachian coal miners, and some future Martian terra former all want to make sure their needs are met.

I don’t think you can really generalize based off race/location. American culture lends itself to being extremely materialistic, but plenty of people from the US find it disgusting.

It’s entitled rich people. It’s always entitled rich people. They’re the same everywhere.

Fair enough. And as mentioned elsewhere in this thread a lot of Westerners’ exposure to mainlanders would be international students who are already going to be selected from the wealthier Chinese people.

Sounds like your girlfriend might be studying here with a student visa or born here. Typically those girls come from very rich families and their concern is not “How do I use my daughter to make some money” instead, they are more focused on the child’s needs.

When I say DEEP China. I’m talking about girls that is middle class and below in China.

I have friends that had to give a million rmb to her family to marry a girl. And do some fucked up shit during the ceremony, like drink foot water.

Yeah she’s a PhD student and her parents both had (what I assume would be) good paying careers. That being said, Chinese people are still humans and can have an entire range of experiences and outlooks, regardless of class. But you’re right that certain ideas are more culturally ingrained.

There are these “games” that they make the groom play. Most of which involves giving money to the family.

Like, doing 100 pushups and if you can’t you pay. Or drinking water that was used to wash your brides’ feet or give money. Most of the other ones are mild like do a sexy dance on a guy friend.
