(Defacto) Dictatorships don’t belong in the EU.

We have our hands full with Hungary, thanks.

He keeps changing his demands all the time. If turkey are let into the EU he will just come up with another excuse. No thanks.

Give him an inch, he’ll take a mile then call you an Islamophobe (if you are not Muslim) or a terrorist (if Muslim) for not giving him 10 miles.

Not counting the obvious blackmail aspect of the Two Pence Sultan’s demand, the whole idea is stupid.

EU and NATO are separate organizations with separate structures. While most of EU are NATO members, NATO issues aren’t, shouldn’t and cannot be decided in EU bodies. I’d be very surprised if anyone in EU (including Sweden) would change their stance towards Turkey unless they themselves undergo fundamental changes to match the applicant criteria.

Unless Erdogan has his head totally up in his own arse, He knows this. He’s probably upping the ante to later back off and make a deal on some other issue that has been too much for NATO or the US up to this point.

Ofcourse this is just my reading of the situation and I’m not an expert on Turkey or international policy. It just seems to fit Erdogan’s Modus operandi.

I don’t trust Erdogan one iota, but as a Greek, I’m glad to see the EU reappearing in Turkish public discourse.

Um, this is exactly why we don’t want you in the EU, Erdogan. Last thing we need is you blocking everything that everyone else in the EU agrees upon.

Bargaining like a carpet seller. Really up to EU standards. We had it for 40 years with the UK, not going to try again with Turkey

Giving up freedom to one dictator in exchange for potential protection from another dictator is a shit deal. No thanks.

There’s a looong way for Turkey to ever qualify for EU and Erdogan isn’t the one leading it when it’s possible

Can we maybe end this farce by having the US sign a treaty with Sweden and telling Erdogan to go pound sand?

Because if we’re gonna be real here for a moment, everyone besides the US is hardly relevant. They’re in the EU already, so who cares?

Here’s the problem, Russia is facing a very real possibility of falling apart. Turkey is in NATO for its strategic position with Russia.

Ergo no Russia threat no real need for Turkey to be a member state in anything.
