META, Google and other greedy billionaire anti-democracy platforms being the sole power arbiter of news and having the power to push only what suits their selfish agendas is something that must be addressed. These companies have been asked to change their ways and have failed. They’ve brought this upon themselves. THANK YOU Liberal government for taking a pro-democracy stand.
Anyone know how these rules will actually work? For example, will link aggregation sites like… lemmy be a target? Legally, how does one insert a boundary between news in google search and (say) a community like CanadaPolitics or WorldNews in lemmy? Yikes!

I don’t see any wording in the legislation that exempts the intermediary, in fact simply being BIG and POPULAR can make you a target.
IE if lemmy.ca gained substantial following in Canada the news outlets could claim it isn’t fair.
Application 6 This Act applies in respect of a digital news intermediary if, having regard to the following factors, there is a significant bargaining power imbalance between its operator and news businesses: (a) the size of the intermediary or the operator; (b) whether the market for the intermediary gives the operator a strategic advantage over news businesses; and (c) whether the intermediary occupies a prominent market position
Good! Thanks
Sucks for the news publishers who had nothing to do with lobbying the government for this. They still get punished - with no google or facebook referrals that is a huge amount of traffic gone.
