What even is the “intimidation”? FB and Google threatening to stop hosting news in Canada? I thought that was literally the intended effect of the law. How is it intimidation?

It’s like if you made playing hopscotch illegal and then people were like “If you don’t change that law back, we won’t play hopscotch anymore. Then you’ll be sorry!” That’s literally the point my dudes.

The intended effect was to create a revenue stream for traditional media players, so saying “our way or we’re out” is, in fact, an attempt to coerce the outcome they want.

tbh I’m kind of hoping fb and google stick to their guns if only so that it solidifies their reputation as a source only for misinformation.

The problem is, they will still distribute foxnews and every nonCanadian news.

Which will replace everything they are removing ATM.

You make a good point in that it could open the doors to better alternatives for search engines/social media as a news source, similar to how Reddit’s management is causing many users to seek out alternatives (ie Lemmy).

I’d be curious to know if there are any solid decentralized search engines and if that’s even feasible.

Fair enough, but I feel like part of the intended implication of the law is that if Meta and Google are unwilling to pay, that they would leave.like that outcome was definitely anticipated before the law was signed. They even did the same in Aus.

I hope they pull out honestly. It’s very easy to find other ways to get your news. It might actually be more healthy for society than having Facebook and Google pushing targeted news onto their users.

Literally this. How is Facebook no longer being in control of what news you see a bad thing? Why is this even a threat?

I’m aware of the outcome in Australia which came after amendments that allowed Facebook to choose which companies it worked with. I personally found it concerning that it resulted in Facebook having the keys to choose which publishers they would pay or block, rather than having to pay for all news shared. That’s my understanding and am open to correction if I’m missing something.

Ultimately, Australia passed the law, Facebook turned off news, and only turned it back on after gaining ground on immendments.

Of course I did - they threatened to ban news in Canada. I don’t see how stating the obvious is misinformation.

I don’t appreciate the knee-jerk condescension that I’ve been seeing less of here than on reddit. Just be nice.

Facebook hasn’t “literally [backed out] of Australia”, the article covers that. You may not appreciate the condescension but I mean, you’re doubling down now on a false premise and refusing to acknowledge the actual specifics of the situation, I’m not sure what you expect when you’re seemingly knowingly spreading misinformation.

Facebook blocked news on their platform in Australia. Everybody in this sub knows it’s in regards to news if you’re implying I’m claiming that their entire service was unavailable. This is like the smallest possible of hairs to split.

that’s not what I’m implying at all, you’re very good at trolling in terms of eliciting a response. for the lazy, from the article (emphasis mine):

Canada is following the lead of Australia, which passed similar legislation in 2021. Meta temporarily blocked Australians from sharing news stories on Facebook, but **the ban was lifted when it reached a deal with the government. **

you apparently know that facebook isn’t currently blocking news in Aus as per your other comment regarding “immendments”, so I’m done feeding the trolls

Yes, I totally agree! As you cited, Facebook blocked news on their platform in Aus (as I phrased it, backed out) after their legislation was passed. And now it’s possible that they do the same in Canada. I don’t understand why you’re hounding me and accusing me of spreading misinformation. Toxic.

I genuinely think I’m being trolled here at this point so I’m going to stop engaging/replying to comments. Have a nice day.
