I came over to snarks because I’m appalled by white women with millions of followers doing nothing to affect change in the world.Seeing people spend so much money daily when Canadians are actively boycotting JoeFrsh, Zhrs , Cstco due to either robbing Canadians of the right to survive or from their participation in funding gnocide is heartbreaking. There were some comments at the beginning, and one of the posts about people being suspicious of new users, and I am a longtime lurker of Reddit (but new to this) as I was waiting for people to say something about all of them being so vapid in the light of actual bad things happening in the world. While I do not, and I’ve never felt comfortable commenting about peoples bodies, because body autonomy is so important, I do feel that there is a space for me here to voice my concern about influencers being downright ignorant when tragedies are happening. It’s in such poor taste, for these influencers to constantly be traveling and showing off all of their products, and then possibly may be linking ways that WE can donate? It’s so infuriating. I know I’ve heard the argument of “what can influencers do” but if they make millions on affiliate links, they have influence. They can and should step up and think of their influence.

Damn, you’ll fit in just fine around here. That’s very broadly the consensus here on Lemmy, expressed in different ways for different communities.

I agree with you. I think people with this kind of platform being willfully ignorant, as you so eloquently stated, is irresponsible. Day after day they post links to fast fashion made in shops with horrendously bad working conditions. This doesn’t even touch on how this kind of excess contributes to our climate problems. This one here can’t even stand up for LGBTQ rights. She has outright refused to use her platform to effect any change in either her community or the wider world.

Yes!! TBP is particularly infuriating because she reduces women to mere consumerists, whose loftiest goal should be to “wear the bikini”. I saw a comment somewhere on IG that said TBP on the runway, was “the most important movement for women” and I wanted to scream. Surely women are capable of much more! She stands for nothing of importance, but is held up as some sort of paragon of women’s empowerment. It’s so twisted.

This is exactly one of the reasons I unfollowed her and started looking into snark pages. She literally never speaks on anything of actual importance, just whatever benefits her. She could be using her platform to do so much good but won’t.
