The US president Joe Biden asks at civil rights event: ‘what do you think he would have done … if Black Americans had stormed the Capitol?’

Joe Biden has launched one of his most scathing attacks yet on Donald Trump’s record of racism, suggesting that the former US president would have acted differently to the January 6 2021 insurrection if was led by Black people.

The remarks, at a dinner hosted by a civil rights organisation in a critical swing state, pointed to an intensifying battle between Biden and Trump for African American voters ahead of November’s presidential election.

“Let me ask you,” Biden said during an address to an NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) dinner in Detroit. “What do you think he would have done on January 6 if Black Americans had stormed the Capitol?”

There was a collective gasp and murmur in the cavernous convention centre, where an estimated 5,000 guests had gathered. The president insisted: “No, I’m serious. What do you think? I can only imagine.”

    Wow, very… Nuanced. Where to even begin?

    How about this? Let’s start here:

    I get your anger, and a lot of what you say is true. However, we live in reality where you sometimes have limited options, some being bad, others being worse.

    Let’s see:

    ALL US presidents have done a lot of shit, and in average, the US is not really a force for good in this world.

    However.

    I want to imagine that you understand the concept of bad, worse, worst, right?

    So the US is bad for the world. Saudi Arabia is worse, China and Russia are the worst.

    So Obama, I’d say, was bad. Biden is worse, trump is the worst.

    What I’m (and many with me) advocating is not voting for the best, I’m advocating to vote for the least bad. Right now, it looks like you will end up either with president Biden or president Trump, like it or not. Believe me, not my choices either, but those are the cards we have been dealt.

    So my question to you is: do you prefer Biden, or Trump? Do you believe that Trump will be better for the world, for the US and for you?

    Trump, who famously lies and cheats to get ahead, Trump who famously said he’ll deport protesting students (don’t ask me how, it’s his idea), trump who wants police officers to be harsher and have more authority…

    Because as I understand you, and please correct me if I’m wrong, you want police to be accountable and less authoritative. Trumo will do the opposite, he claims so all the time.

    So with that in mind, do you want trump or Biden? If you want neither, that’s not an option, you’ll get either one of those as your president and that person WILL influence the police.

    So which do you want?
