It would seem that you took it as more of “trying to get ‘in’ with a boys club”. I don’t think either interpretation is wrong, per-se, but one does have a bit of a more negative tone to it, IMO. Far be it for me to tell you what to think, or that your understanding is wrong. Bluntly, it was a fairly poor choice of words on the commenters part.
