      Small nitpick, but it’s actually spelled “materiel” when referring to military equipment. It’s based on the French word. The rifle is an anti-materiel gun, meant to penetrate non-hardened military materiel.

        As in food and other supplies on a relatively soft target like a convoy. Didn’t stop my high school classmates from twisting “they shoot at vehicles with it” to “they shoot out engines with it”

      Pedantic point: it’s anti-materiEl, not anti-materiAl. Materiel in a military context refers to hardware, such as vehicles.
