I don’t think it needs to be mean spirited to be transphobic. The implication seems to be that he is tying to determine whether a sex worker is trans by asking if they are a boy. There’s probably a better way to word that question, but then it wouldn’t fit the meme.

Ah, I see. Someone might read this to mean trans women aren’t women. I didn’t mean it that way but I suppose that makes sense.

No, Thai culture has five genders iirc. The punchline is that the tourist only knows about two genders and is confused

        That’s a very charitable interpretation.

It’s a charitable interpretation of OP’s intended meaning. I’m not disagreeing that there are nonbinary trans Thai people. Do you really think this meme is a joke about the subtleties of Thai sex worker’s identities? This is clearly about finding out if a sex worker is trans by asking if they are actually a boy.

Also, OP initially defends the post by saying they find trans sex workers sexy as hell. For real?

I don’t think the person who posted this meme yesterday is the one who made the meme. I think it’s a re/crosspost. I think that since it’s a meme making fun of tourists to Thailand for being transphobic, the author would have to be someone who understands the basic subtleties of gender in Thailand.

I don’t think the distinction between poster and meme creator is particularly meaningful here. I also think that OP may have meant well. What exactly this meme is making fun of isn’t as clear as you make it out to be. It seems like a somewhat lazy setup(which is fine, not hating on shitposting) for the punchline more than something directed at sex tourists, to me anyway. The downvotes that lileath got were probably unwarranted, because there is a discussion to be had about the transphobia in this meme. Edit. Especially because the punchline is literally transphobia, whether intended by OP/ meme creator or not.

The meme’s punchline is that a tourist is transphobic. That’s not funny if the meme’s author is transphobic. It’s only funny if the author is laughing with us, at the tourist. I think the meme is supposed to be funny, so whatever is funny must be true

Right. Funny. Cuz everyone has the same definition of funny, and nobody finds any degree of transphobia funny on the internet. Therefore the only correct interpretation of memes are those that don’t include transphobia. Fuck me.
