It’s really unfortunate that this compromise exists in our system. It’s only ever used to suppress the rights of particular groups a given provincial government doesn’t like.

It’s not a compromise. It’s a bare toothed act of suppression of our rights. Doug Ford tried it and was shouted down.

The people of Saskatchewan have to ask themselves why he is choosing to do this? Do they think that this is a big problem or is Moe doing this to try to pick a fight with the federal government in the hopes that it will hurt Trudeau and advance the interests of the christofascists, like the Biden impeachment in the US, or is he trying to distract you from something else that’s going on with this christofascist virtue signaling? Aren’t there more important things that your government could be doing than harming children?

I mean the Notwithstanding Clause was a compromise to get the 1982 constitution passed, and it’s unfortunate that happened. Scott Moe’s government’s actions here are not a compromise and are reprehensible.

It’s pandering to the extremist parts of the conservative base, plain and simple.

Definitely. As the Liberals have swung to the right through center the Conservatives have had to swing further and further right. The platform of the Liberal party has wide public support including a woman’s right to choose (around 60%), gun control (around 85%), and LGBTQ rights (around 85%). The only way the Conservatives can win elections is getting the extreme right to join the, “I’m going to vote Conservative even if the leader kills and eats a baby on the lawn of Parliament” voters together. The right wing parties haven’t beaten the left wing parties for the popular vote in Canada for decades.

And yet, we have conservative premiers in most of the provinces and PP is polling ahead of the Liberals by significant margin. I don’t understand how people can look at their open hostility to the Canadian way of life and say “yeah, that sounds like traditional Canadian values”.

I think that a lot of it is lies and manipulation. Doug Ford in Ontario ran a campaign to paint Kathleen Wynne as corrupt and wasteful. The ignorami become convinced that it’s true and vote Conservative. Then Doug Ford’s own auditor publishes a report that says that while Wynne did increase provincial government spending the vast majority of that spending was on programs that benefited the people of Ontario. Then, Doug Ford cuts programs and gives money to a lacrosse club and horse racing tracks.

Jason Kenney ran a ghost candidate to split the vote so that he could win the leadership campaign in Alberta. Conservatives the world over understand that they are in the last days of their power. The world has moved beyond their ignorant and backward ideas and the only way that they can hold on top power is to lie and cheat. In the US we see the death throws of the Republican party where they only way they can stay in power over the next few years is to throw out the US Constitution and establish a christofascist autocracy.
