Ok i have been reading various TBP snarks for a while but have never actually participated. I find Sarah despicable, and most of the stuff that disgusts me about her social media presence is well-covered:
exploiting her child in ways that are truly unfathomable to me as a parent, plagiarizing content left right and center, lying about having work done/using filters while actively profiting off of the bopo movement, and this recent egregiously flippant “cancer scare” (as someone with intimate knowledge of cancer, fuck you for this one, Sarah. I hope the pay cheque was worth it, and I hope you never, ever know the truth of how horrible it can get). The list goes on and on and on, and I actually think snarkers perform a public service by documenting and calling this out in real time.
One thing I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is her bastardization of feminism. It’s implicitly called out in almost all the snark, and here are some of my explicit thoughts on this one:
The last year has been especially fucking rough for women, femmes and queers, especially people who have other intersections of marginalization. Given all of this gestures wildly at the state of the world, I find Sarah’s more recent “girl power”-coded and queer-baiting content despicable. Sarah Nicole Landry is not a feminist, she is a grifter to her core. This woman has an INSANE amount of privilege - she is a cis, white, wealthy, able-bodied, conventionally attractive woman living in one of the safest cities on earth. She could do so much with the platform and resources she has. But instead, she exploits women’s insecurity to sell over-priced skin care, fast-fashion and other crap that will pile up in landfills under the guise of being our parasocial bestie (forehead kisses!!). Sarah claims to challenge patriarchal beauty standards by posting pics of her stretch marks and videos of her jiggly thighs. Once in a while she posts basic (and plagiarized) “feminist” responses to reality TV or other cultural moments (usually late to the party/stale takes). She hints at things like being prochoice. Nothing she does with her massive platform does a damn thing to challenge patriarchy or empower women, but all of it does a lot to line her pockets and feed her ego.
Her nontent is worse than vapid, it is actively harmful. But it is also a truly rich text for watching choice feminism and commodity feminism unfold and mutate in real time. One day if I have some spare time, maybe I’ll write an actual essay to discursively read this grifter through the lens of choice/commodity feminism in late-stage capitalism… i wonder if anyone already has. Ok thanks for coming to my ted talk!
I agree, I love Substack. I think the writer should consider starting one. Not just for Bird, but the overall bastardization of feminism. I’d subscribe and pay.
Oh this should be pinned to the top!! Please write that essay! Women need to read this far and wide! I recently was reading about how cults and even hypnotism works. It’s micro prompts to do this and do that. Suddenly you are in. And this is what has happened. Slowly women find themselves following her because that one thing they can relate to pulls them in. And then she’s some authority. It’s how I first started following her. And in a short time I could see something was off from her basic messages and what she actually presented. After feeling like I had been duped…I thought certainly let me see if I’m the only one.
Very well said, there’s many layers of manipulation that are foundations for what is terribly wrong with today’s influencers. I’d love this to be a published article.
Yes, exactly! The layer of manipulation I think I’m trying to get at here is a very subtle form of woke washing… she gestures towards feminism (and, increasingly, queerness) as a marketing ploy. But it’s a marketing ploy, full stop. She is not empowering people, she is taking advantage of widespread insecurities and vulnerabilities to grow her own wealth and feed her insatiable ego. That Kit article written about her in October 2025 has the byline “For Traitors Star Sarah Nicole Landry, Vulnerability Is a Superpower”… yes, it really is her superpower, but not in the way they present it in that article. The article calls her a “disruptor” on the basis of the warm, honest, intimate way she shares her changing body and insecurities. This is performative vulnerability and the commodification of insecurities. She is not doing a single thing to “disrupt” the systems that cause women/femmes to feel insecure or render them vulnerable. She is exploiting and reinforcing these systems purely for her own gain.
She’s using tactics that are as old as time to sell people things they don’t need but she just has it wrapped in a bikini and filtered her conventionally pretty face. She can tell herself she’s some kind of warrior all she wants but she’s no different than the vacuum salespeople who would go door-to-door (in the olden times 😊) gain entry into your home, earn your trust and sell you an overpriced machine. It’s the same thing using modern means.
This is just it. These people are salesmen. Middle men that do the grunt work of pushing product for the corporation and of course they use the most tried and tested (and tired) method to sell shit, sex. Like how many times has a women put on a bikini to sell something? She thinks she’s special for some reason but when she’s not “hot” anymore she’ll be so easily replaced lol
