        Ah no, you’ve clearly got that wrong. The real definition is: anywhere north of Avignon is the north of France/Paris.

        Or so I was told by people in Marseille.

        Except it is. The South East at least. Nice is near the alps for instance. I would say that Nice is in the south of France. I mean, the departments are literally called “Alpes Maritimes” and “Alpes de Haute-Provence” in the southern parts of the Alps. There is more to the Alps than the ski stations and Chamonix.
