Their civil rights movements, gay and trans right were never avant guard, but were ahead of most of the world second only to Canada and the better parts of europe. Hollywood was doing a solid job of getting racialized and LGBTQ2S+ roles in the public domain. I would say Hollywood was more progressive than any other country’s film and TV industry.

All that progress is crumbling fast now, so… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

          Again

“Anything good that came from America was in spite of it, not because of it”

All of those were accomplished IN SPITE OF America and its prevailing culture. Not because of it.

The civil rights movement was a counterculture movement. Same with the gay and trans rights movement. They were never part of the mainstream until VERY recently (literally less than two decades) and only to the extent that the capitalist machine can co-opt the movement and commodify it in order to sell back to us the feeling of being “part of the resistance” in classic capitalist fashion, until said resistance movement loses its steam which is what we are currently experiencing.

          You’re falling for a performance.

Yes, but compared to what? Very few places even pretended to have the performative.

Edit: and by the standards of your argument, the same critique applies everywhere.

Compared to the alternative political ideologies that those movements were founded on which theorize the structure for a more egalitarian and altruistic society.

Yes it does apply everywhere. Good for you for noticing. Almost like I fundamentally am opposed to modern society and believe it to be inherently oppressive and exploitative in its structure.

The US civil rights movement was driven by the European diaspora running away from the destroyed infrastructure of Europe and WWII GIs that were treated more humanely while at war than back home.

I’d say I’m pretty spot on.

Census and mpi agree, however, given the government fucked up funding it’s not possible to access the us census foreign born data from 1950 to 2025.
