Back when I gave flight lessons, it was in an airplane with a single stick between the seats. For training, we put this little hook on the top of the stick so the instructor had somewhere to hold. I would often just hook my pinky over it, to impress upon my students how light a touch the airplane really needed. Honestly setting the altimeter would be more of a pain in the ass without a thumb than maneuvering the airplane.
I would say yes, in order to have a sufficient grip on the stick/yoke
