My experience was South Africa after living inside it for several years, is that many of the English South Africans were just as racist, but happy to let the Afrikaners do the dirty work and take the blame. After all, English speakers make up about 40% of the white population.
Oh there are plenty of incredibly racist Anglophone South Africans - no denying that. It’s just that there’s nothing he could do to make the Afrikaner Nationalists welcome him because he’s not an Afrikaner by blood.
As a generalisation, the racist white South Africans also tend to have an English/Afrikaans tribalism that provokes tension, while the non-racist ones also tend not to give a damn about that tribalism either. The same is somewhat (but not entirely) true of racist black South Africans, and honestly that distrust amongst the various racist groups is a major reason that South Africa has been able to make so much progress.
