    I would say the former. Your latter definition also excludes autocross

      I always thought a race was setting off together and seeing who finishes first. I always saw it as one of those square/rectangle things: all races are tests of speed, but not all tests of speed are races. Can’t remember if I was taught it specifically or just picked it up from somewhere.

      Regardless, it’s not meant to exclude anything, it’s not a value judgement or a way to look down on anything. It’s just easier to know what you’re talking about with precise definitions.

      Doesn’t really matter anyway as the autoracing community isn’t big enough to splinter into smaller communities.

        I wouldn’t consider something being excluded as a negative, just more like a venn diagram thing. I think anything where you’re are competing on time is a race so that would include rally, time trials or autocross. Drifting, demolition derby, stunting etc would be motorsports but not racing.
