Canada’s province of Ontario will slap a 25% export tax on electricity it sends to 1.5 million homes in Minnesota, Michigan and New York, in retaliation for President Trump’s tariffs, said Doug Ford, Ontario’s leader.
Ford added that he will direct the province’s energy producers to shut down the exports entirely if Trump moves ahead with even more tariffs on April 2. He said he would direct his minister of energy to redirect energy from an Ontario nuclear reactor to local manufacturers instead.
Alberta should do the same for oil. US refineries that buy the oil would have to spend $20B on a new refinery that takes 5 years to use different oil.
Ontario action may reduce electricity prices for Canadians, raise revenue, and increase US inflation that is pressure to remove tariffs.
Saskatchewan needs to turn off the Potash and Uranium delivery. Once people realize where that stuff is now coming from Trump may have to answer for some things.
Export tariffs. Raises revenue.
The best and most reliable source of potash is in Saskatchewan they are running off to Russia and Belarus for it now, because the US cannot mine theirs the same way we can. Thing is Putin is going to royally F over Trump in the very near future and no embargo tax will be reasonable, the new receptacle tariffs Trump will put on everything on April 2nd will only hurt more. We are looking at a long trade war.
Don’t have the standard hatred for Russia, but it is silly to give them preferential trade status, while every ally is “screwing over the US”. SK Potash has a huge shipping advantage to farm areas over sea and coastal ports.
Other Premiers should be more aggressive on export taxes now, and if somehow we need to compete with Russian Potash in a month, then they can be revisited.
