Donald Trump has shown renewed interest in the U.S. acquiring Greenland ahead of his inauguration next week.

Summary

Danish intelligence (PET) accused Russia of forging a 2019 letter from Greenland’s foreign minister to U.S. Senator Tom Cotton, requesting funds for a Greenland independence referendum.

The forgery reportedly aimed to sow discord between Denmark, the U.S., and NATO.

Cotton had previously discussed U.S. acquisition of Greenland, which Trump revived in early 2025, citing strategic and security reasons.

Greenland’s PM reaffirmed its sovereignty, while experts linked the plot to Russia’s geopolitical efforts.
