Please keep the thread civil and read the whole thing first, it is huge and you can learn a lot from it + the comments are also interesting.

Well it looks like a lot of thought has gone into it, but I got to say when facing reading a huge article, this tone in the intro makes me weary

“…but I fear you won’t be, for most of you are too superficial to realize the importance of some of the facts.”

Imagine spending your time writing online rants about how terrible FOSS is instead of helping to improve it. Idk where this entitlement comes from.

It is not really a rant rather than a Benchmark Review, he added some stuff afterwards based on the comments. He even mentioned and pointed out some jokes, mixed with his own experienced he had.

Also, he did not say FOSS or open source in general is terrible, he said that Linux has a terrible performance, which is based on the Benchmarks correct.

Windows also had issues, remember the SSD performance story, the M2 performance story, that happened last year.

Bottom line is that the performance overall was not okay, I think not on Windows and also not on Linux and that both need to continue to optimize.

Ah, I must have overlooked that because the benchmark only makes up a small part of the text and because of the title.

I’ve been finding the long criticism of linux sort of silly lately.

Linux is fine. It’s no worse than windows 10 in most respects. In a lot of respects it’s better in ways that are significant. Linux DirectX backwards compatibility through wine is so good it was ported to windows and it’s one of my first go-tos when old games don’t run on Windows 10!

Sometimes the problem with applying a critical eye to something is you’re starting with the conclusion that there’s something fundamentally wrong with it. Starting with a conclusion and working your way backwards is the definition of begging the question. Sometimes fallacious logic can act on ideas like gamma radiation acts on DNA and can cause a beneficial mutation, but often it just causes radiation burns.

That isn’t to say that any linux distro is perfect, but it’s a long walk from imperfect to terrible, and I don’t think the article makes it there.

I think the “the only ones that no one complains about are the ones no one uses” applies here.

Great article : some parts are about :

1- USB flash drive benchmarks, * many models, * many file systems …
2- copying large files beyond the internal caching abilities of the flash drive makes the writing speed drop by ~10x … so, impossible to trust any benchmarks ; real use ( Linux install for instance), has to be done.
3- all Linux’s window managers and all it’s desktop environments are less ergonomic than Win95, … KDE Plasma 5 is an horrendous bloat.

The author of this article is doing his job, don’t ask a cinema critique to shoot movies. (… i may update after reading more )

      continuing.my.comment.:
      From that article :

“For fuck’s sake, are they all completely dumb in the FOSS world?!”

This statement is completely wrong in most situations, yet :
.1) in the context it seems right, and
.2) the word “dumb” should be replaced by “disconnected” from user’s reality.
