I’ve been playing The Case of the Golden Idol this week and I love how it doesn’t pull punches and how I actually have to figure things out without a multiple choice quiz.

A rarely mentioned cute little puzzle game that you might like is called Carto.

What are your favorite mystery/puzzle games that don’t spoon-feed you?

I’ve also been playing The Case of the Golden Idol lately. I’m not usually a big puzzle player but it’s good. I’ve just got to Case 11 which seems like another step up in difficulty. I think it might be the last chapter. I enjoyed the way it started off as a really casual spot-the-item game and has really ramped up.

This would have to be Braid. They just remastered it recently when Netflix invested into them. Probably the toughest puzzle game I’ve played.

You’re probably aware already, but the sequel, The Rise of the Golden Idol, was released a week or so ago. I’ve not played it yet, but likewise loved the original and its expansions, so I’m quite hopeful :)

Portal 2 is probably still my favorite. Portal is perfect but the sequel is longer and more visually interesting, the writing is still funny and the graphics hold up. I replay it every few years and beat it a little faster each time

Stephen’s Sausage Roll is a game I will never beat. The Tower broke my brain, what I played was constantly inventive with the basic toolset it had

I heard Golden Idol is similar in to The Return of the Obra Dinn, is that true? I loved Obra Dinn and I have netflix

Edit: also I need to try Carto at some point, good rec

I would say that it’s true in that the game lets you keep a journal and will confirm information from a lot of options if they’re correct.

Might be stretching the definition of puzzle game because it’s also a metroidvania, but I really liked La-Mulana.

They’re older classics, but Myst and its first sequel Riven. The third, Exile, is good too but rough in spots, after that I wouldn’t bother.
