In theory, replacing Proof-of-Work (where the security is defined by the amount of energy used) with Proof-of-Stake (where the security is defined by the amount of “value” “staked”) is a solution, but in practice there remain a lot of unsolved problems with that approach (which I don’t have time to dig in to at the moment).
